Prince Albert and Queen Victoria
Prince Albert was Queen Victoria's consort. Upon his deathbed, he reviewed Lord Russell's incendiary dispatch which Russell intended to send to the United States regarding the Trent Affair. Prince Albert softened the rhetoric of the provocative dispatch giving Secretary of State Seward a diplomatic out by declaring that Captain Wilkes had acted on his own authority without formal instruction from his superiors.
