Lord John Russell
Lord John Russell served as Lord Palmerston's Foreign Secretary during the Trent Affair. Lord John Russell served as the Prime Minister of England both before and after his time as Foreign Secretary. While Prime Minister he was noted for his work in social reform and parliamentary reform but was criticized for failures during the Irish famine. He was a published author having written essays on history, a novel, and a play, as well as a biography of Charles James Fox.
