HENRY JOHN TEMPLE, 3RD VISCOUNT PALMERSTON or Lord Palmerston
Lord John Palmerston, the Prime Minister of England during the Trent Affair, was a dominating figure in British politics from the period 1830 to 1865, when England was at its height. He was very popular with the people and the press, having received the convivial nickname "Pam" from them. Unlike President Lincoln, Palmerston was strong in foreign policy experience. Although he tended to side with the Confederacy, his actions, through his partnership with Lord Lyons, contributed to the successful resolution of the Trent Affair and more amicable relations with the Union.
